What is Coaching and Mentoring?

Coaching is defined by the ICF as a partnering relationship with the client in an inspiring, thought-provoking and creative process to maximize personal and professional potential, which is especially important in today’s uncertain and complex environments. Coaches believe that each client is creative, resourceful and whole, and has the power to find their own solutions. (icfturkey.org)

Coaching can be done with individuals and teams (team coaching). It helps the person overcome the distance between the place they want to reach and their current situation through awareness, motivation, individual strategy creation and action.

EMCC definition of mentoring is: “A learning relationship, involving the sharing of skills, knowledge, and expertise between a mentor and mentee through developmental conversations, experience sharing, and role modelling. The relationship may cover a wide variety of contexts and is an inclusive two-way partnership for mutual learning that values differences.” (emccglobal.org)

Mentoring is preferably based on coaching. On the other hand, coaching does not include advice and guidance while a mentor can give advice and guide the mentee as needed.
